Grain fill is looking quite good considering the year the crops have had to go through. Pictures are from 2 weeks ago and crops have really motored on in the mean time. Hopefully crops will yield better than expected but time will tell.

Now is time to start thinking about cover crops, cultivations and rotations for next year and land management ( sort drainage and soil health issues) once fields are cleared.

A bespoke multi species grass mix for cattle, to help improve DLWG (Daily Live weight Gains), reduce fertiliser inputs, improve soil health and working with the environment. This mix contains:
- Chicory: large tap root helps break up compaction. Chicory also has tattins which help with growth and are a natural wormer
- Legumes (red, white, crimson, aslike & vetch) help increase protein content but also improve soil health with the different rooting structure and N fixation.
- Plaintain: fibrous rooting breaking up surface compaction and drawing up minerals from the soil.

Meet with a new grower in Tramore, Waterford today. Looking at the Spring barley.

First picture shows good rooting and a healthy soil with the Rhizosphere ( soil surrounding plant roots) this tells me the soils are fairly healthy with lots of soil bacteria and fungi. This had slurry applied pre drilling which certinally shows and helps with the high levels of P which helps rooting.

Second picture is of spring barley drilled 7 days ago on some reclaimed land. Left hand side fields get FYM every couple of years and right hand side only just getting dung every year but shows how tiered land affects crop health. Both farms need to work on their soil health, increase P index’s, improve rooting and reduce compaction. Don’t expect land to produce if you don’t give enough back. Spring beans looking well. The rhizosphere looking alot more healthy this year. Pea and bean weevil has been active as can see by the notching on the leaves. This grower uses insecticides so a recommendation will be made. Nice nodulation on clover in this Multi Species Ley. These nodules are absorbing Nitrogen from the atmosphere and storing it in the soil to feed the plants and soil, reducing/ eliminating artificial chemical application. Just have to address the compaction issue in this field which will be done by an aerator. Scanned the ewes today. All came back in lamb with a scanning percentage of 1.7%. Most lambing around end of jan into feb with a few stragglers heading into mid March. Scanning is important so we know what we have and can meet the energy requirements needed with their feed. They are on good grass and will get home grown oats as-well.

Fresh wood chip for a batch of cattle. Most livestock are bedded on wood chip here as-well as straw. The wood chip helps keep livestock cleaner and absorbs more liquid than straw. Once sheds are cleared out this will be composted using Bokashi ( Japanese fermented composting method) to retain as much nutrients as possible, reduce carbon losses and hugely increase soil health and nutrient retention in the muck.

Sheep are looking in great condition. They have been moved to fresh pasture a reseed carried out this year. Lambing is 2 months away and scanning will be taking place soon to tell us how many lambs a ewe is carrying.

Lambs will be sold direct from us in meat boxes. Can’t ask for a carbon neutral, eco friendly, low input high output produced lamb providing great flavour in the meat.
