Our Acres Graze mix doing well with the rape and turnips producing good rooting and breaking up compaction ahead of reseeding. Excellent top soil structure, very well aerated by rooting and worm activity. There was a worry about surface compacting but doesn’t seem to be an issue with great water infiltration. This will be cut as a hay crop and silage this coming year with grazing undertaken next year. This has had no nitrogen applied just 2000gal/ acre applied in Feb. Dung/ slurry/ poultry litter/ composts are all val

Dung/ slurry/ poultry litter/ composts are all valuable to the soil. They each have slightly different strengths and weaknesses but mainly do the same thing. Applications of organic matter help:- improve water retention, helping plants during drought periods but also allowing the soil to absorb more water in wetter periods. - providing nutrients, ensuring plants have good amount of nutrients helps growth, improves yeilds, helps reduce the plants susceptibility to diseases. - reducing inputs, with organic matter being applied you are able to cut down on artificial fertilisers, reducing emissions, reducing your inputs leading to higher profit margins, giving the bacteria in the soil food to feed on.
